Luke was a physician and a Christian evangelist, originally from Antioch in Syria. He did not know Jesus directly, but was a faithful disciple and companion of Paul during his missionary journeys. Luke is famous for writing the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, which narrate the life of Jesus and the spread of Christianity. His Gospel focuses on God’s merciful love and Jesus’ preference for the poor and sinners. Luke is revered as a saint and his feast day is celebrated on October 18th.
Luke is also known for his culture and fluent Greek, which allowed him to write works of great literary and theological value.
