Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector, or publican, in Capernaum. Jesus called him to follow him with the words “Follow me!” and Matthew immediately left his job to become one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Matthew is considered the author of the First Gospel, written for the Jewish-Christian community. After Jesus’ death, Matthew preached in various regions, including Syria or Ethiopia. He is revered as a martyr and patron of various professional groups, including bankers and accountants.
Matthew is remembered for his prompt obedience and humility. His feast day is celebrated on September 21st.
